ORIENTATION NORTH

The buildings are positioned to optimise winter sun and minimise summer sun.

STEP LIGHTLY

The buildings have been designed with a small footprint to minimise site disturbance.

DESIGNED FOR DISASSEMBLY

The building has been built with little glues or nails, rather it has been bolted or screwed together. The building materials can be reused at the end of the building's life.

GREEN BUILDING MATRERIALS

All building materials used in construction were carefully selected for their environmental benefits.

HEAVILY INSULATED

Virtually the entire envelope of each building has been double wrapped in a natural wool insulation (from sheep!)

OPERATIONAL ENERGY

The energy required to operate the studio is an important design consideration. Lighting uses low watt solutions and is arranged with diversity and flexibility in mind, minimising artificial lighting by optimising daylight. Studios are heated by wood fires and cooled by cross ventilation. Studios have solar hot water systems. We buy "green power" electricity.

WATER

All showers have low-flow shower heads. All taps have aerators fitted. All gardens are planted with local native species that require no watering. Rainwater is caught in tanks for consumption. All the greywater from showers, baths, vanities and laundering is treated in reed beds and re-used on site and to water a small orchard.

VEGETATION

- The property has been registered with Land for Wildlife. Over 4000 new trees and shrubs have been planted. Wood for fires is collectd from the property - there is more than enough natural growth in the regeneration of the 10 acre block to sustain the fuel demand indefinitely.
